The Shape of Belonging

About

After losing Lina, the best friend who understood her in ways few others ever had, Mara is learning that grief doesn’t disappear. It simply changes shape, but moving forward brings an unexpected question: Where do you belong when the person who once felt like home is gone?
As a Deaf ceramic artist, Mara has spent much of her life navigating a hearing world where being invited hasn’t always meant being included. Then she meets Ava, a Deaf teenager carrying a loss of her own.
Through clay, shared grief, unexpected friendships, and the people who continue to show up, Mara begins to discover that opening her life to new connections doesn’t mean leaving Lina behind.
Her pottery studio slowly becomes more than a place to create. It becomes a gathering place filled with imperfect signs, laughter, and the quiet evidence of people who choose to stay.
The Shape of Belonging is a heartfelt story about Deaf identity, grief, friendship, chosen family, and finding connection after loss.
Because sometimes belonging isn’t a place we find, it’s something we create together.
